Did you know women only use 10% of their wardrobe 90% of the time?! Think of all the space we could be putting into our closets! Like the little black dress or red lipstick, there are certain fashion staples that never go out of style.
When it comes to building a new, solid wardrobe, the tops we choose matter because of how often we wear them. From a good classic tee to the perfect button up, scroll down to see what tops every woman should have in her closet.
Tops Every Woman Needs: Tees & Tanks
Sounds pretty standard, but you’d be surprised how many women discount basic tees and tanks in their wardrobe. Whether you prefer slouchy or fitted that’s totally up to you, but I strongly suggest basic tees in white, oatmeal, gray and black.
- Long Drape White Tee
- Crewneck Oatmeal Tee
- Scoop Neck Gray Tee
- V-neck Black Tee
- Spaghetti Strap White Tank
- Muscle Tee Gray Tank
- Thick Strap Black Tank

Isn’t it crazy how sexy camisoles can make us feel?! Perfect for a simple day outfit or chic date look, camisoles are uniquely a staple and a trend.
- Ivory Camisole Top
- Flounced Blush Camisole Top
- Satin Camisole Top
- Asymmetric Camisole Top
Silk camisoles are a must; once considered an early 2000s don’t, they’re quickly making their way back by the likes of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid.

Whether button down or button up, go from classic to 90s grunge in these must-have buttoned tops for a solid wardrobe foundation. Like basic tees, level of fit depends entirely on your and your personal style. Personally, I have one fitted and one loose white button down and semi-fitted plaid and chambray tops.
- White Button Down
- Chambray Button Up
- Flannel Plaid Button Up
- Silk Button Down
Want a loose fit? Try the men’s section; don’t be afraid to blur those gender lines (there’s no law against that, apparently just in public restrooms…)
This is how I wear my button down!
Shirts & Blouses
I call this the miscellaneous section, but here is where you can add personal style and body type to your wardrobe.
- Peplum Top
- Bow Blouse
- Band Tee
- Lace Blouse
Band tees are my favorite. I wear my Madonna t-shirt everywhere. Peplum tops are so figure-flattering and a great piece for multiple occasions. Add a bold print or unique statement like a brooch.

The great thing about these tops is the variety of options you have to create amazing outfits! This is all interchangeable per season, but I believe this is great starting point for the amazing wardrobe I know you can build. Take a look at your tops and see which pieces you’re missing – maybe a good basic tee or a great classic button down. If 20% of your wardrobe goes to trends, do so per season, I honestly love shopping trends, just don’t be excessive.
