Welcome to another post of Skincare Saturday's! This week, we're demystifying toners and removing any bias' or misconceptions you may have about them.
I used to hate the idea of using toners, especially when for the longest time I used astringents that dried out and irritated my skin. For those of us with oily, sensitive and/or acne-prone skin, we’re traumatized by the effects of astringents that could disinfect an operating table. Toners are a lot more beneficial than you think.
The Best Toners and How to Use Them
Important video tips to remember about toners:
- Reset the pH balance on your skin to bring it to a healthy, normal level which means normal skin type
- Removes any additional debris or residue your cleansers didn’t
- Preps your skin to absorb all the essences and serums you may additionally be adding to your skincare routine
Below are my 5 best toners to use for those with oily, sensitive and/or acne prone skin or a combination. They’re inexpensive, powerful and beautifully packaged.
Hydra V Toner by Artistry ($24): This toner is completely alcohol-free and really removes all the dirt and grime that may still be lingering around your face. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t feel heavy on your face. This is the toner I’m currently using; you will go through a period where your skin will break out and although that’s not typically a sign something is working, this toner really does lift those impurities to the surface and ultimately out of your skin.
Balancing Toner from Artistry ($50): The most expensive on the list, the balancing toner leaves your skin feeling refreshed and is perfect for oily-to-combination skin types. It leaves your skin oil-free throughout the day with a fresh, matte finish. I just finished mine a few weeks ago and I can vouch for the matte-finish. Adding matte foundation and my other skincare products my makeup stayed on all day and my skin felt moisturized.
RE:P Organic Cotton Treatment Toning Pad ($44): What I love most about these is they are pre-soaked cotton pads, removing a step! Great for those with sensitive or dry skin, it’s free of mineral oil, sorbic acid, animal ingredients, surfactants, parabens, mineral oil and propylene glycol.
COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Toner ($16): This is $16 of toning gold! I use COSRX for my blackheads and it’s been helping so much! It’s great for daily exfoliation to penetrate your pores and dissolve dead skin cells, sebum and debris.
Clinique Clarifying Lotion ($14-24): Depending on bottle size, price does vary. Clinique has been around for years and for good reason – they’re products work! Their clarifying lotion sweeps away dirt and debris and is perfect for combination-to-oily skin.
