I love my curls. Love everything about them; wouldn't want to change a thing. I love the way they either curl or zig-zag; how they shape my face and how I feel bold when they're out and doing their thing. I also love when my hair is straight. Dramatic. Demure. Silky. One of the best things about our hair texture is the ability to mold itself into whatever it is we want it to be. Now, that's beauty.
I started going natural circa 2013, my senior year of college. As someone who still straightens her hair, I would say my hair is in a permanent state of transition. Constantly being told I had to choose between straight and curly hair, I struggled to adjust to being a ‘naturalista’ while still enjoying the looks and comfort straight hair afforded me. It wasn’t until I took a visit to The Curl Suite in Chelsea I was informed I not only don’t have to choose, but I can have beautiful hair once instructed how to get defined, frizz-free curls.
How To Get Defined Frizz Free Curls
When I went to The Curl Suite, one of the first things I did was ask a million and one questions because there are so many things I didn’t know about my own hair! I didn’t know that, on average, there are three curl patterns at any given moment on one’s head or that when properly taken care of and nurtured, curly hair can be straightened with your curls bounce back.
Knowledge Is Power
After learning about my curl type, one of the main things I learned was product knowledge and how the products we put on our hair can drastically alter the way it feels, looks and reacts to our surroundings. After using water-based products provided by Alex at The Curl Suite, my hair transformed. It felt lighter, less greasy and more natural than when using creams.
A couple things about water-based products such as moisturizers that are good to note:
- Water-based moisturizers penetrate the hair shaft while oil-based moisturizers coats the hair shaft. You want to use the water-based moisturizers first and seal with an oil-based moisturizer after.
- Water-based products are best in the fall and winter seasons when the air is most dry
- Water-based products keep your hair moisturized throughout the day. I noticed immediately my hair dried and felt light versus its usually heavy feel
Drying Your Hair
Typically, I let my hair air dry as I like spending as little time as possible worrying about styling. When I do want a more defined, frizz-free look however, I use a diffuser to help my hair along. I was so grateful Alex showed me a few techniques I’ve tried at home that allow my hair to have that salon-style look. Set your hair dryer to the medium, cool setting. Be sure not to over-dry your hair as this will create frizz. Hang your head sideways or upside down when diffusing, gently placing sections of your curls into the bowl of the diffuser.
In the end, I think it’s important to do what is best for us and our lifestyle. Whether you choose to wear your hair curly each and every day or occasionally straighten, we must be knowledgeable in our hair so we know how to take care of it. Looking at the picture above I didn’t even know my curls could look as beautiful as they are and I see my hair each and every day! Moreover, I live with my hair. Be true to yourself and most importantly, love everything God has blessed you with. Thank you, again Curl Suite! Until next time.
